Whether you are halfway through your first year or staring your final exams squarely in the face, you are probably thinking long and hard about your future. You may be considering going on to do a PGCE to work in education – maybe related to your subject. Over the last year or so, it has become apparent that the UK has another IT skills shortage. Coding will be the big thing for the rest of the decade and for a graduate like you, there are many reasons to teach coding. Since September 2014, it has been compulsory in schools in England.

Coding is a Growth Area

Graduate roles are recovering, but they have yet to reach the availability levels of the pre-2008 economy. Not only is teaching essential in boom times and in bust times, but coding is a skill that many teachers lack. ICT teachers with coding skills at Primary and Secondary level are in short supply and the younger the children, the greater the shortage. This is why the government is on a drive to encourage coding from a much earlier age than the curriculum presently requires.

Vital Skills for the Workplace

One of the greatest reasons to teach coding is simply that we’re going to need it as a core skill in the next few years. IT is no longer the domain of the “whizz kid” with so many standards and languages being simpler to use and easier to learn. As we expect to rely more and more on technology in the future, coding is likely to become vital as businesses look to build software in-house.

Higher Earnings

With great demand comes higher earning potential and if financial reward is your thing, then there are no greater reasons to teach coding. Job security is almost guaranteed (something rarely guaranteed in the 21st century) and a higher wage level is a given as businesses seek to attract a finite resource. Everybody likes to be headhunted and if you prove exceptional, you will probably be in demand.

Kids are Passionate about Technology

In teaching kids to code, you will be harnessing foreknowledge and a passion about technology not really seen in previous generations. Children of all ages would be fascinated to know how their iPhones, laptops and Kindles work. It is also known that children like practical work; by demonstrating to them that they too can create simple apps for their phones, you will not only be enriching their lives, but may even find yourself labelled as one of the cool teachers.

It’s Fun for Both of You

Most people would love to have jobs that are a pleasure and despite that teachers’ morale is at an all-time low, you could take lots of enjoyment from the job and make it fun for the children you teach. With so many authorised resources and even games that can aid you in the teaching process, you are likely to experience job satisfaction in seeing their joy of learning.
