How to Do Student Life as an Introvert

Student life, particularly in the first year, can be quite difficult for some people. Being pulled to every party on and off campus, as well as being encouraged by your Student Union to “Get Involved” in anything and everything, this demand that you be outgoing all the time can be quite intimidating. Student life as an introvert can be difficult, but there are ways to survive the constant expectation.

Don’t Lose Site of Why You Are There

Some students easily forget that they are at university to get a degree and as an introvert, that’s probably the main reason you are there – not to socialise and drink lots of alcohol. Student life as an introvert has its advantages and you will find the library or libraries to be one of many sanctums where you will feel in your element. You will soon settle down and feel you made the right choice once Fresher’s Week is over.

Ignore the “You Should…”

It’s not always easy to ignore everyone inviting you to the big party of the week and looking disapprovingly when you say you’d rather have a quiet night in watching a film and a glass of wine. Student life as an introvert is very different and though sometimes you might enjoy parties, you don’t want to have a constant stream of them. By all means be open to nights out, but be firm in your own needs – your alone time and quiet nights in with a small group of friends are important.

Join Groups

You can get involved as an introvert and today, student societies have groups to suit all interests. You can be around people who understand you and share your interests and this is where you will make some of your long-lasting friendships and acquaintances. You know you have a definite comfort zone. Most people do not understand that shyness and introversion do not go hand in hand; you like being around people, but they have to be the right people and at the right time.

Set Goals, Rise to the Challenge

Most introverts like being around people who make them comfortable and being in social situations where they feel comfortable – but there is always a limit. Student life as an introvert can be a challenge but if you set out to achieve certain goals in socialising – tangible, achievable goals – you will find the experience very rewarding. You are probably a problem-solver because you think a lot. Set social goals and see them as exciting challenges rather than sources of anxiety.

Finally… Remember That You Need a Break Sometimes

The student lifestyle is not just about partying. Nor is it just about your degree and building a network of contacts. Student life as an introvert can be very enriching if you pick your challenges and goals, and your friends and social scene carefully.
