Now, don’t be fooled by Blackburn Colleges name, it isn’t just a sixth-form. While it does cater to those studying A-levels it also educates and produces many degree graduates. In-fact, this large town in Lancashire produces over 75% of all graduates in the county, with nearly 50% of those passing with a 2:1 or a First.
Student Life and Blackburn
So, you might be wondering how so many students get such high grades, well, the college seems to believe it is because of the size of the student base it educates. One of the smallest universities in the country, Blackburn has enough resources to give a better quality of individual attention than many of the other, biggest, universities. The staff and past students believe it is this specific attention to their study that had led to such a high grade average. So, academically then, this place is a goldmine, but how is the leisure? The student union runs a few interesting nights such as music gigs, pub quizzes and comedy nights, but, as the campus is without an SU club or bar, if you’re looking for a drink you’re going to have to head into town. Now, there is a scattering of student friendly pubs and bars near to the uni that all offer student deals, however, the best part is the closing times. Blackburn led by example when the new laws about late night licensing came into place and, as a result, most pubs and bars in the town center are open until 2am every night. However, if you are more of a club person, the big nights out are only 40mins away by train as Manchester is just over the horizon. If drinking isn’t your thing many famous singers, bands and entertainers frequent the famous King George’s Hall in town, and the SU themselves are known for organising secret gigs with big names just for students, so keep an eye out for that as well. Sports are also also going to play a big part in uni life at Blackburn now they have just finished their sports hall and gym, new for 2014. If you don’t like to play, but like to watch sports, the Blackburn Rovers football team are known for putting on exciting home games at the enormous Ewood Park.
