Bristol is a thriving city situated close to the Welsh boarder with its western edges surrounded by the river severn. Home to two universities, Bristol University and the University of West England, the city has a large focus on student life, but also has a lot of its own customs and traditions. And yes, the west country, or “farmer,” accent is dominant in Bristol. Don’t be afraid to mang with the locals. Mang: west country slang for mix. Don’t worry, you’ll learn.
Student Life in Bristol
Being a large city, you can imagine that there are a lot of exciting places to go on a night out, and you are right. With clubs like Bunker, Oceana, Rehab and Syndicate and bars like Vodka Revolutions, the slug and lettuce and MacKenzies bar, you’re guaranteed to find a place you love, with music anywhere from mainstream to indie. However, clubs and bars aren’t all Bristol has to offer, although for a lot of students in the city that is what they live for. The city offers up some of the best live music pedigree in the country, with numerous high quality music venues all over the city, playing host to some of the biggest names in music. The world famous Anson Rooms, part of the University of Bristol, is possibly the best for students to visit, having previously hosted such icons as David Bowie, Coldplay and Blur. For students not interested in the club nights or music gigs, or for those that want to do it all, both universities have a number of interesting societies including the Pancake society, the lip-syncing society and even the American favourite, dodgeball society. All of this comes at a cost though, and the cost is, the cost. As a big and affluent city Bristol is an expensive place to live, so you better watch your pockets and sort out that overdraft before you set foot into this student paradise.
