Located in between Manchester and Birmingham (both a one hour drive away), Keele University received its status in 1962 after being founded as the University College of North Staffordshire in 1949. Despite its rural setting among the village, ts 620 acre campus makes it the largest in the UK.
Student Life in Keele
Keele’s founders had aimed to establish a University that had a “breadth of study” and “community atmosphere”. The first of which had been achieved with Keele being a pioneer in the dual-honours degree format and the latter reflected in the amount of students living on campus (around 62%). Though the population may be smaller than most other UK Universities, making your way around the campus will more than likely result in bumping into someone you know; which isn’t always a bad thing! Keele SU is the main social hub on campus with neighbouring boroughs of Newcastle-under-Lyme and Hanley offering a more varied array of nightlife in the form of pubs and bars.
Concert venues and theatres a-plenty with the likes of the New Victoria and Regent theatre, not to mention the legendary Sugarmill. If theatre and music aren’t your scene then you are sure to find something you’re into in one of Keele University’s clubs and societies; from Animanga to Paintball and Eurovision to Quidditch (of the Muggle variety, of course). You can also head East on occasion for a day out to Alton Towers; the preferred theme park in the North of England. But before you start planning your activities, you’ll need to sort out where you’ll be staying. Here’s Pads for Students’ brief guide to student accommodation in Keele.
Places to Live Near Keele University
As mentioned before, Keele University covers some of the village itself but students choose to live outside of this immediate area. There may be a bigger commute but bordering districts such as Newcastle-under-Lyme, Kutton and Silverdale offer more of an urban student lifestyle with all of the bigger bars, restaurants and shops located there. So don’t limit your search for accommodation in Keele to Keele village itself!
Keele Accommodation for Students on a Budget
The average weekly rent per person in University provided student accommodation works out at around £104, not everyone is guaranteed a room on campus (only freshers who selected Keele University as their first choice are), but is home to around 70% of the full-time student population. Other options are available, whether that be privately run halls, student houses, flats or other such properties.
This four bedroom property is located in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme, just off Keele Road, meaning it’s in easy walking distance of the main campus. Fully kitted out with furniture, appliances and including all bills, at just £90 per week it’s cheaper than halls and gets you a lot for your money.
Not too far from here, and even closer to Newcastle-under-Lyme’s city centre; which means easier access to the nightlife, is another 4 bed student house (one of which has its own en-suite!) and again comes with all bills included, a fitted kitchen and is furnished throughout.
