STUDENT LIFE IN SHEFFIELD

Sheffield is a friendly city with a lovely vibe to it, with excellent shopping it is home to Meadowhall and also has a great nightlife. The city of Sheffield is in the North of England, in the county of South Yorkshire and off Junction 33 of the M1.

England’s very own Steel City while compact in size compared to others in the country is no wallflower. The city centre is alive with bars and clubs, the high streets bustling with clothes and department stores and its roads are lined with an impressive public transport service. There are a number of parks, theatres and sporting arenas if you ever need an escape from the fast paced student lifestyle. Being a student in Sheffield means you’re never a 15 minute walk or £2 taxi fare away from somewhere you want or need to be.

The Halls of Residences are located close to the campus’ and generally within the city centre while houses and flats can be found dotted about in almost any part of town you wish to be, like the two separate though equally charming properties, IQ Brocco and IQ Steel. Another thing to consider is that if living in a house/flat share doesn’t suit you after you venture out in your 2nd/3rd or 4th year, both uni’s will gladly welcome you back to halls*.

SHEFFIELD ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS ON A BUDGET

If like most students you decide to start your student life in Halls of Residence rooms can start from as little as £80 a week (bills are usually included) and aren’t necessarily the drab breeze blocked places you may have imagined. For example, The Pinnacles with its modern fittings and furniture or Opal 1, as pictured above with its laid back communal area and on-site swimming pool. Halls are a great way to be introduced to a whole variety of new people to enjoy some of the perks with like free Sky TV and pool in common rooms or an on-site laundrette and gym.

However, in the following years many go on to share houses with previous flatmates and/or coursemates not only for more freedom but also because it can work out quite a bit cheaper. As with any city, the general rule of thumb is that the further you go from the centre, the cheaper the rent. BUT take into account money that may be spent on transport to and fro uni/nights out because while great and frequent (you’re never waiting long for a taxi to appear), this can add up in a week. A great in between for those who want the stability of halls with the added freedom then the Norfolk Park Student Village may be for you. Located just a stones throw away from Hallam’s City Campus, it’s far enough out of the hustle of the city whilst still being close enough to roll out of bed and into lectures.
