“The Gateway to the World”, or Southampton as it’s more commonly known to everyone, is the largest city in the county of Hampshire and was the point of departure for both the Mayflower and the Titanic. We have Southampton to thank for giving us Craig David and Matt Cardle, but more importantly, the two institutes of higher education, the University of Southampton and Southampton Solent; which combined bring the student population of the city to over 40,000. Luckily Pads for Students have a whole lot of student houses and flats to rent in the Southampton area, and this blog is going to give you a peek inside a few of them.
Student Life in Southampton
Being the port town that it is, you can expect an array of watersports to keep you both active and entertained with the largest boat show in Europe held annually in September. And while you may not be planning on making use of the English Channel that regularly (though, the option is there if you do), travelling in and out of Southampton is fairly easy for the average student. Go north to get to Southampton International Airport; which offers national and European destination flights, or for those less frequent fliers, you’ll be happy to know the coach station is close to the City centre and a train to London will only take you an hour. But getting around inside the city itself is where you’ll really benefit with the free City-Link bus service as well as student specific Uni-Link line that gets you from campus to campus; which comes in handy considering there is 6 campuses (though we doubt it’ll take you all the way to the Malaysian one..).
For entertainment and eateries, the Universities offer many on campus options with their own cafes and bars and the city itself has a wide selection of club venues and even more of your typical British pubs. The more cultural among you should definitely check out the Mayflower Theatre that hosts West End shows as well as National Opera and Ballet schedules. The main place to shop is the WestQuay development and houses all of your favourite retailers in fashion and big name department stores. Basically, there’s plenty to do whether you choose to see a film at Leisureworld or catch a game at Friends Provident St. Mary's Stadium, there will be something to your taste.
